AI Tools Pricing Guide 2026: What Every Tool Actually Costs

A comprehensive pricing reference for 82 AI tools across 15 categories — free plans, entry pricing, per-seat costs, and hidden charges. Updated March 2026.

AI tool pricing is deliberately confusing. Per-seat pricing, credit-based models, usage tiers, annual-only billing, custom enterprise quotes — every vendor has found a different way to make it hard to compare prices. This guide cuts through the complexity.

We track pricing data for 82 AI tools across 15 categories. Here’s what everything actually costs, organised by category, with the billing model traps you need to watch for.

The Big Picture

Across all 82 tools we track: - 59 tools (72%) offer a free plan - Entry-level paid plans range from $5/month (ElevenLabs) to $189/month (Clearscope) - The most common price point for an individual paid plan is $20/month - Per-seat pricing can multiply costs rapidly for teams

The $20/month price point has become the de facto standard for AI tools aimed at individual professionals — ChatGPT Plus, Claude Pro, Perplexity Pro, Cursor Pro, Writesonic Individual, Ideogram Plus, and SlidesAI Pro all land at exactly $20/month.

AI Chatbots & Assistants

The general-purpose AI assistants have converged on similar pricing:

Tool Free Personal Power User Team
ChatGPT Yes $20/mo (Plus) $200/mo (Pro) $25/user
Claude Yes $20/mo (Pro) $100-200/mo (Max) $30/user
Perplexity Yes $20/mo (Pro) $200/mo (Max) $40/seat
Gemini Yes $19.99/mo $249.99/mo (Ultra)
Grok Yes (via X) $8/mo (X Premium) API usage-based
DeepSeek Yes API only ($0.28/MTok)
Microsoft Copilot Yes $20/mo $30/user (M365) $19/user

Key insight: ChatGPT and Claude are functionally identical on pricing at the individual level. The team tier is where Claude is more expensive ($30 vs $25/user). DeepSeek is the clear winner on API pricing by a factor of 10x. For a detailed comparison of the top two, see our ChatGPT vs Claude guide.

AI Coding Assistants

Every coding assistant offers a free tier — the competition for developer adoption is fierce:

Tool Free Entry Paid Mid Tier Enterprise

Cursor Yes $20/user $60/user (Pro+) Custom
GitHub Copilot Yes $10/user $39/user (Pro+) $39/user

Cody Yes $9/user $59/user
Tabnine Yes $9/user $39/user
Replit AI Yes $25/mo $40/user
Amazon Q Yes $19/user

Key insight: GitHub Copilot at $10/user is the cheapest meaningful paid upgrade. Cody and Tabnine at $9/user are cheaper but more limited. Cursor and Claude Code at $20/month are the premium individual options. For the full breakdown, see our best AI coding assistants guide.

Pricing Traps to Watch For

1. Per-Seat Multiplication

A tool listed at “$20/user/month” costs $240/year for one person — and $2,400/year for a 10-person team. Always calculate your total team cost, not the per-seat price.

2. Annual-Only Billing

Some tools quote a monthly price but require annual payment. A “$15/month” tool billed annually means you’re paying $180 upfront with no option to cancel month-to-month.

3. Credit Depletion

Credit-based tools (Cursor, Adobe Firefly) can run out faster than expected. Premium model usage burns credits faster than basic models. Monitor your credit consumption during the trial period.

4. Feature Gating

The “free plan” might exist, but the features you actually need might be locked behind higher tiers. Semrush’s free plan is too limited for real SEO work. Lavender’s 5 free emails per month isn’t enough to evaluate properly.

5. Custom Enterprise Pricing

“Contact sales” means the price isn’t transparent. Tools like Ada, Gong, Eightfold AI, and Outreach don’t publish prices. Expect annual contracts, minimum seat counts, and prices that vary based on your negotiation skills.

The Bottom Line

The AI tools market has matured to the point where you can build a comprehensive toolkit for under $50/month — or even $0 — across every major category. The expensive enterprise tools justify their price through team features, governance, and integration depth, not through fundamentally better AI.

For individuals and small teams: start with free tiers, add $9-20/month tools where they save you meaningful time, and avoid enterprise pricing until you genuinely need enterprise features. Our small business guide maps out the optimal stack at different budget levels.
